The week of October 9, Granite Falls Fire visited all kindergarten through third grade classrooms in Granite Falls to teach fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s theme, Protect Your Family from Fire, was the key message kids learned in the classroom.
The kids took home goody bags containing activities such as home fire escape plans and fire safety checks to complete with their families.
Children that turn in their completed packets to their teachers by October 28 will receive a coupon for a free McDonald’s ice cream cone from the Fire District.
“Being in the schools allows us to give kids life-saving information to keep their families safe from fire. Children absorb so much information and are often those that hold adults accountable to safety standards at home,” stated Fire Chief Jim Haverfield. “If we can reach the kids, we hope we can reach the adults as well.”
A key to Protecting Your Family from Fire is to have working smoke alarms in your home that will alert you to a fire with enough time to get out safely.
Alarms should be in each sleeping area, and on each level of the home.
If your house does not have working smoke alarms and you’d like to have them installed, please contact Granite Falls Fire District at 360-691-5553.
